Aurora: Rolling Terrain and Plenty of Water
Hydroseeding in Aurora means working with rolling ground and a lot of water. The city covers about 24 square miles, and more than a square mile of that, about 1.15 square miles, is water. Geauga Lake straddles the northern boundary, and the Aurora Branch of the Chagrin River runs through town.
Rolling lots
The former Aurora Golf and Country Club was built in 1924 on natural rolling terrain along the Aurora Branch. That 220-acre course closed in 2012 and is now Paddock River Preserve. Home lots in the area share the same rolling shape. Every rise and dip affects where rain goes, so we fine-grade to keep water moving off the lot without cutting rills, and use hydromulch heavy enough for the slope.
Pond and stream banks
With this much water around, many yards include a pond bank, a stream edge or a drainage channel. Banks are covered with BFM or a stapled erosion blanket; channels get blankets pinned at the top and sides. Silt fence goes between bare soil and the water until grass is established.
Flood history
In 1913 a flood destroyed Aurora's Silver Creek Cheese Factory, and the cheese industry that had made the town famous declined afterward. It is an old reminder that the streams here rise quickly. We seed low areas only after checking how water reaches them.
New homes
Aurora's population grew 10.9 percent between 2010 and 2020, to 17,239. New lots need grading, topsoil and hydroseed lawn installation, and builders need sediment control during construction.

Aurora Questions
How do you seed a pond bank?
We shape it to a stable slope, spray seed with a bonded fiber matrix and pin a blanket at the waterline where waves or runoff hit.
My lot rolls a lot. Do I need erosion control?
On anything steeper than a gentle grade, a heavier mulch or blanket is worth it, especially on swales.
Can you keep sediment out of the stream behind my house?
Yes, with silt fence between the work area and the water until the grass takes.
Do you work on new builds in Aurora?
Yes, from grading and topsoil through final hydroseeding.
