Independence: Interstates, Offices and a River Valley

Hydroseeding in Independence leans heavily toward commercial and site work. Much of the city's land is taken up by the junction of I-480 and I-77, a four-level stack interchange, and the Rockside Road corridor was developed in the 1970s into offices and hotels. Those sites have slopes, ditches and detention basins that need seed every time something is built or repaired.

Construction site seeding

On commercial jobs we follow the site's erosion control plan: silt fence installation before grading, inlet protection on catch basins, temporary seed on stockpiles, and final hydroseeding with a mulch suited to the slope. Banks along the highway often need BFM or stapled erosion blankets.

Stormwater rules

Independence was one of five cities, along with Brecksville, Strongsville, Lyndhurst and Beachwood, that challenged the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District's authority to charge a stormwater fee. In December 2015 the Ohio Supreme Court declined to reconsider a decision that let the district manage stormwater and collect fees. For property owners, it means stormwater is a regional issue, and keeping soil out of sewers is part of every job.

The valley side

The Cuyahoga River flows through Independence, and the north end of the Towpath Trail in Cuyahoga Valley National Park is at Rockside Road. Tinkers Creek joins the Cuyahoga in Valley View nearby. Homes on the valley side of town often have steep back yards; we seed those with heavier mulches and blankets.

Independence Questions

Do you follow a commercial site's SWPPP or erosion control plan?

Yes. We install and seed to the plan's details and can return for inspections and repairs.

Can you seed slopes next to highway ramps?

Where permitted, yes, usually with blankets or bonded fiber matrix.

Why does inlet protection matter here?

Sediment in storm sewers is a regional stormwater problem in Northeast Ohio, and most plans require it while soil is bare.

Do you also do residential lawns in Independence?

Yes, including steep back yards on the valley side.
