Seeding a Village on a Scenic River
Hydroseeding in Chagrin Falls is small-scale and careful work. The village covers only about 2.1 square miles, was laid out in 1837 and grew up around the waterfalls on the Chagrin River. Settlers came for the High Falls' water power, and mills and factories lined the banks. Today many lots are compact, close together and close to water.
A state scenic river
The Chagrin River was designated a state scenic river in 1979. Yards that drain toward it should not be sending soil downstream. On any village job where bare ground slopes to the river or a storm drain, we place silt fence, wattles or inlet protection before we start and leave them until the grass is mowable.
Rock layers along the river
Along the Chagrin, Bedford shale sits above the Cleveland shale, and Berea sandstone is found from roughly 950 to 1,070 feet. The village sits around 1,004 feet, inside that sandstone band. Where shallow rock or steep banks leave little soil, we bring in topsoil and use a bonded fiber matrix so seed holds on the face.
Older homes, tight access
In a village laid out nearly two centuries ago, yards are often reached only through a gate or down a narrow drive. A hydroseeding hose can run a long way from the truck, so we can seed back yards and terraces without heavy equipment on the lawn.
Shade and old trees
Mature trees shade a lot of village yards, and thin grass under them is the most common complaint we hear. We match the seed blend to the light each part of the yard gets, and on very shaded slopes we may suggest a groundcover strip instead of lawn so the bank stays covered.

Chagrin Falls Questions
Can you seed a back yard reachable only through a gate?
Usually yes. The hose runs from the street, so nothing heavy crosses the lawn.
Is there special care for lots that drain to the river?
We put sediment control in place first and keep bare soil to a minimum.
Our bank has almost no soil over rock. Will seed grow?
Only with added topsoil and a mulch that bonds to the slope. We will show you the options.
Do you do small lawn repairs?
Yes, though small areas have a minimum charge. The written estimate shows it.
