Hudson Seeding With the 2003 Flood in Mind
Hydroseeding in Hudson has to account for some serious storm history. In July 2003 more than 17 inches of rain fell in 24 hours, and all three of the city's main watersheds took flood damage, with Brandywine Creek hit hardest. A lawn or slope seeded in Hudson should be ready for heavy, fast rain, not just an average shower.
Five watersheds
Surface water in Hudson flows into five major watersheds. The three biggest are Brandywine Creek, Mud Brook and Tinkers Creek; a small part of the west edge drains to the Cuyahoga and the southeast corner to Fish Creek. Which one your lot drains to matters less than the fact that water leaves fast. On Hudson jobs, swales, ditches and slopes get stapled blankets or BFM instead of plain mulch.
Large lots and open space
Hudson merged with Hudson Township in 1994, and the combined city covers about 25.9 square miles. The city has worked to preserve open space, and its park board oversees more than 1,000 acres, including Hudson Springs Park with its 50-acre lake. Big lots near woods and parkland often have long slopes toward a stream. On those, we seed in sections and keep silt fence in place until grass takes hold.
Commercial and redevelopment
The former General Motors plant, about 1 million square feet, and the First & Main development show that Hudson also has commercial ground to stabilize. Parking islands, retention basins and site edges all get hydroseeded once paving and grading are done.
Our approach in Hudson
- Check where every downspout and driveway sends water
- Line swales with straw or coir blankets
- Hydroseed with a mulch rate that holds through a downpour
- Keep sediment control in place until the stand is mowable

Hudson Questions
How do you make a new slope survive a Hudson-size storm?
Blankets in the channels, a bonded fiber matrix on the face, and fixing where concentrated water enters the slope.
Does it matter which creek my yard drains to?
Mostly it tells us where sediment would end up. The protection we use depends on slope and flow, not the creek name.
Can you seed a large lot in phases?
Yes. Seeding in sections keeps less soil bare at any one time.
Do you seed retention basins on commercial sites?
Yes, including the side slopes and spillway areas.
How long should silt fence stay up after seeding?
Until the grass is thick enough to mow, typically several weeks.
