Getting the Ground Right First

Grading, topsoil & dirt work in Cleveland is what turns a rough lot or a torn-up yard into ground that can grow a lawn and send water away from the house. We do yard grading and land grading, bring in and spread topsoil, fine grade for seed, and handle the smaller dirt work that comes with drainage fixes. The same crew that grades the yard can dig and trench for drainage as part of a seeding project, such as shallow trenches for downspout lines or a French drain.

Why grading matters on clay

The native upland soil around much of Northeast Ohio is glacial till. In the USDA's Mahoning series, a common example, the surface is a dark grayish-brown silt loam about 7 inches thick, then firm silty clay that water moves through slowly, and a perched water table that sits 6 to 12 inches down from October through June in most years. Water that cannot soak in has to be moved across the surface. A yard that is flat or tipped toward the house collects water against the foundation and leaves soggy, thin turf. A yard graded to shed water stays drier and grows better grass.

What a good grade looks like

Ground should fall away from the foundation, then carry water to a swale, the street or another outlet without crossing a neighbor's yard. Low spots that hold puddles get filled. High spots get cut. Swales get a gentle, continuous slope so water keeps moving. We use a laser or level on larger areas and check the result by eye after the first rain.

Topsoil: how much and what kind

On new construction lots the original topsoil is often stripped, stockpiled or buried under clay from the basement dig. We bring in screened topsoil and spread it over loosened subgrade so roots have a real layer to grow into. Depth depends on what is there and what you want; we measure and put it on the estimate. Fill dirt is used to build up grade under topsoil, never as the growing layer.

Fine grading for seed

The last pass before hydroseeding is the fine grade: rock, roots and clods raked out, the surface smoothed and lightly firmed so the slurry lands on even soil and the mower will ride smoothly later. This is where a lawn's final look is set.

Dirt work that comes with drainage

Many of our grading jobs start with a water problem. Downspouts dumping against the foundation, a backyard that turns into a pond every spring, or a hillside sending mud into the driveway. Along with grading, we dig shallow trenches for downspout extensions and drain lines and backfill them before seeding. Deep excavation or foundation work is outside what we do, and we will say so.

Timing

Clay is easiest to grade when it is moist but not wet. In Cleveland's spring, with April and May each averaging close to 3.8 inches of precipitation, we sometimes wait a few dry days so equipment does not smear and compact the soil. Late summer is usually the easiest season for grading and seeding together.

Grading, Topsoil & Dirt Work Questions

How deep should topsoil be on a stripped Cleveland lot?

Enough to give roots a real layer above the clay. On a lot where the topsoil was stripped, we measure and recommend a depth on the estimate. On lawns that still have good topsoil, we may only need to fill low spots.

Water collects by my basement wall after rain. Can grading fix that?

Often, yes. Regrading so soil falls away from the house, plus moving downspout discharge, solves many cases. If water is coming through the wall itself, a waterproofing contractor may be needed too.

What is the difference between fill dirt and topsoil?

Fill dirt is subsoil used to raise or shape grade and has little organic matter. Topsoil is the darker, richer layer grass roots need. We use fill under topsoil, not instead of it.

Do you do excavation and trenching?

Shallow drainage trenching for downspouts and drain lines, yes, as part of grading and seeding work. Basements, foundations and deep utility digs belong with an excavation contractor.
