Mentor's Two Kinds of Ground

Hydroseeding in Mentor depends on whether a lot sits on an old beach ridge or on the flat lake plain beside it. Much of Lake County lies in the Lake Plain region, crossed by ridges that are beaches left by glacial lakes. The northernmost, Elkton beach, sits at about 625 feet, and Lake Shore Boulevard follows it in Mentor Township.

Beach ridge soils in this region drain fast. The USDA's Chili series, found on outwash, kames and beach ridges in northeastern Ohio, is well drained with high permeability below. On ground like that a new lawn dries out quickly in July. We favor spring and late-summer seeding, use a full mulch rate to hold moisture, and suggest a drought-tolerant blend.

Low lots near the marsh

Mentor Marsh started as a river channel that became marsh and then swamp forest; Lake County's records call it an abandoned channel of the Grand River. Low lots near it and elsewhere on the lake plain stay wet. There we grade first, then seed, and keep sediment out of ditches with silt fence.

A lesson from the marsh

In the 1960s salt mine waste dumped into Mentor Marsh killed the native plants, phragmites took over, and a 2003 fire burned more than 400 acres. A full restoration was finished in 2018 and 180 native species have since been recorded. It shows how much the ground near the lake depends on what runs into it. On jobs near wetlands we keep bare soil small and stabilize fast.

Mentor grew from 4,354 people in 1960 to 36,912 in 1970. Lawns from that wave are now more than 50 years old, and many need regrading and full lawn renovation.
